Making sure you know what to look for and properly timing out your trimming and pruning schedule is critical if you want to be successful. One of the more obvious things that you can feel confident in when you're trimming back shrubs is that if you can clearly see where the green part of the plant ends and a brown, dead spot of the plant begins, it is safe to remove and will instantly make your plant look more healthy and attractive.

These shrubs are safe to trim back early on in the spring without fear of losing any buds and are safe to shape and trim to your preference.

Take a good look at any bushes or trees that are bordering any walls of your home, garage, sheds, or other outdoor structures. Large plants can retain and attract moisture and pests, which is why it's a good idea to have at least 2 feet of space between these plants and the exteriors of any structures on your property. Trim back any tree branches or shrubs that have grown too close to (or above) your home.
If you previously laid down mulch over perennials for the winter, you'll need to remove it or brush it back so that it does not smother and hinder the regrowth of your perennials. Be sure to remove any old or excess mulch before applying your new mulch. When you're laying new mulch, you typically want to spread it between 2-4 inches thick, but you'll want to use it more sparingly around perennials, shrubs, and trees. Spreading mulch too heavily near these plants can either prevent water from getting to the roots, or cause too much water to pool and sit at the plant's base.

Trash at the landfill is compacted into \"cells\" to make the most of landfill real estate.

With the help of bulldozers and other heavy machinery, garbage is compacted daily into cells, covered with a layer of dirt about 6 inches thick, and then compacted again.

The purpose of the additional layer of dirt is to minimize stench and make it more difficult for pests to access the garbage.

Some areas are using alternatives to dirt, like cement or tarps, to save even more space in each landfill.

Collecting and Containing Liquids
\r\n\r\n
Stormwater draining systems are placed on top of the landfill liner to filter out liquids from the compacted trash and from natural precipitation.

From there, an additional drainage system is used to separate all leachate from the rainwater.
\r\n\r\n
Leachate is the liquid produced by trash and is a contaminant to both the waste and the rainfall.
\r\n\r\n
Rainwater is collected in drainage ditches and sent to collection ponds where it is tested for traces of leachate.
\r\n\r\n
Once it is deemed safe, it is redirected to a body of water offsite to be added back into the environment.
\r\n\r\n
The draining system for leachate has a pipe system that sends these liquids to a collection pond for leachate only, where it is allowed to settle and is tested to determine the chemical levels of the collection pond.

From there, the leachate is chemically treated and either sent back into the landfill so that it can be soaked up into the compacted trash where it does not reappear, or released back into the environment after it is determined as clean and safe.

One of the byproducts of decomposing trash is the production of harmful gases like carbon dioxide and methane.
